Mouqabalah

The mouqabalah, without improvisation

This is where the process becomes concrete. Done well, it settles in an hour what three months of messages would not have resolved.

What it is

The mouqabalah is the meeting held with a view to marriage. The word is written several ways, mouqabala, moukabala, mouquabala or mukabala, depending on how the Arabic is transliterated, and it refers to the same thing each time. It comes after a serious proposal has been made, and it has a precise objective: to decide.

It is neither a first contact nor a phase of getting to know one another spread over time. It is a meeting, with a before and an after.

Who is present

The sister's wali, or a mahram. His presence is not decorative: it is what distinguishes the mouqabalah from a date.

Being alone together is excluded, including when the meeting is held remotely. What the texts aim at is that he not be alone with her; the rule applied here settles the remote case too: a two-person video call, with no third party, is not opened on the platform.

What questions to ask

The useful questions bear on what will actually structure shared life: practice and its seriousness, the relationship with family, where the couple would live, children, work, health, debts, each person's view of their role.

The useless questions are the ones that can be answered out of politeness. An honest mouqabalah must be able to produce a "no", and a "no" needs no justification.

One piece of advice that recurs among people of knowledge: write your questions down beforehand, and ask them in order. The emotion of the moment makes you forget the essential.

The mouqabalah by video

It has become the norm as soon as families do not live in the same city. It changes nothing of what the texts require: that there be no seclusion. The rule chosen here is narrower, and distance changes nothing there either: the guardian is present in the exchange, not merely told it is happening.

On Nikah, the video meeting is held with three people, the wali receiving a dedicated link to join the call without creating an account.

Afterwards

Only two outcomes, and both are good: you move towards the contract, or you stop. What damages these processes is the third path, where nothing is decided and the exchange drags on.

Declining after a mouqabalah is not a failure. It is exactly what it is for.

Frequently asked questions

Must the guardian attend the whole mouqabalah?

What the texts require is that there be no seclusion: they name for this the presence of her father, her brother, her mother or other people. The rule chosen here is narrower: the guardian stays present from beginning to end, including at a distance. He need not intervene constantly, but he must be there.

How many mouqabalah before deciding?

No number is fixed. One is often enough when the questions have been prepared. Drawing the process out is a symptom, rarely caution.

Can a mouqabalah be held by video?

Yes, provided the guardian is present in the call. What the texts aim at is that he not be alone with her; the platform draws its own rule from that and opens no two-person meeting, remote or in person.

Can you decline after a mouqabalah?

Yes, without justification, on either side. That is the whole purpose of the meeting.

How does the mouqabalah work on Nikah?

It is held with three people from the platform, the wali joining the call through a dedicated link, without creating an account.
